Donald "Don" Richard Ohs passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family on January 16, 2026. Don was born in Little Falls, Minnesota in the fall of 1936. The last of six children born to Merle and Emma Ohs, he enlisted in the Army out of high school and served for 3 years before trying his hand at college and subsequently joining the Air Force. Before retiring in 1975 Don's distinguished 20 year career in the U.S. Air Force included serving as a especially selected crew member on a E-4 Advanced Early Warning Airborne Command Post, the critical survivable command post for the national command authority including POTUS and SECDEF. Don met and married his wife Sarah "Lib" Shackelford in 1973 in Alexandria, VA. They moved to Occoquan shortly after, beginning their marriage of 52 years. Don and Lib welcomed two children in 1977 and 1981. After his retirement from the Air Force, Don had a successful career with State Farm Insurance becoming the local agent for the Woodbridge area. When he was not in his office, Don could be found at various places around Occoquan, making friends and staying up on the happenings of small-town life. When his children were young, Don made sure that family time was a priority, taking trips together in the RV during the summer. As the kids got older, the trips were to visit the many places they chose to call home. Don learned at an early age how to work on vehicles and continued to perfect this skill throughout his life. He enjoyed working in his garage repairing and rebuilding cars and welcomed friends to gather around the wood stove and share some stories or a beer or two. Don did not miss a deer season, and along with his son, enjoyed the camaraderie at hunt camp each fall. In addition to his countless hobbies, he was an active lifetime member of VFW Post 7916 in Occoquan, holding various positions in the club over the years. The one he enjoyed the most being house committee chairman as he oversaw everyone having a good time in the "canteen". Don is survived by his wife Sarah "Libby" Ohs, son Jason Ohs and wife Sarah, daughter Donna Nelson and husband Greg, four grandchildren Shea, Wyatt and Bryce Nelson and Brandon Ohs; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored.
